Well, I'm a sax player first, and became an oboe doubler four years after college. All I had to go on was my vague memory of my secondary oboe class in college, but I swear I remember the prof. talking about sliding. She also mentioned that if it gets hard to slide, use some oil from behind your nostril on your finger.
I play (practice) pretty regularly now, and I don't think I could do anything other than slide. I've gotten pretty fast at it, and it's become very natural. I also know other people that slide and, of course, ones that roll (rock?).
I guess it's one of those questions for the ages! Once we figure that out, and whether it's proper to use throat or abdominal (diaphragmatic) vibrato, we'll all be set!!

ps - I've noticed that since I started sliding on the oboe, I've found myself sliding on clarinet...BAD!!
