... aah, from your description, are you left handed? If one holds reed tube in left hand, tying over the tube is clockwise, but if you hold reed tube in your right hand, tying over the tube is anticlockwise

Although, as you say, if you've always done it the same way and only now got problems, perhaps it's the way the thread itself is twisted?
Did you also start a new spool of thread (perhaps twisted in opposite direction from previous spools) about same time problem began?
