How old are you? You don't have to answer but I can tell you from experience that my reed making suffered for a couple of years because I didn't realize that as I entered my late 30s my ability to focus on things at reed making distance was deteriorating.
If there is enough overlap when you tie the cane on, it can't change the by itself. Therefore, there either isn't enough overlap, or it's not overlapped in the right direction to begin with.
I suggest that you go to the drug store and pick up a pair of +100 or +150 reading glasses and see if that makes a difference in your ability to see the overlap when you tie.
I use both the Joshua+2 and the Samson+1 and they both tie on pretty easily at "standard" lengths.
