A way to ensure a correct overlap is to fold the shaped cane the way you want the overlap to be, in the direction deisred, and then slide it onto the staple. Check again after the first couple of turns that the overlap exists as you set it. It's also profitable to fold the shaped cane with greater overlap than supposed to be, since the thread tends to push the blades back to parallel position. Perhaps giving more overlap is the solution to this problem. Reeds and their weirdnesses...
