back in high school I started on alto sax. I also played in a polka band so It was required that i also play clarinet. The orchestra needed an oboe so I started in grade 10. By college i went the band director route and also started playing trombone and trumpet. Grad school was only oboe. Skipping 30 years I now play 1st french horn in the local city band, tenor sax in a dance band.

Doubling from flute to oboe is extremely difficult; oboe you use little air and have to get rid of it. Flute you have to use more air and greater airflow focus. French horn to valve trombone I don't have trouble but from either to trumpet is a problem.

In doubling instruments it's all about muscle groups you use. Trouble you have from sax is from larger reed to smaller. I also play soprano sax and moving from that instrument to clarinet is a piece of cake IF you remember what instrument you have in your hands at the time.

Moving from a large brass mouthpiece to smaller is also a problem. Moving from one woodwind to another is much easier than from large brass mouthpiece to smaller. Time to play well on ONE instrument usually is for most people all the goal you need. For me the city band oboe parts are borderline boring and the band needed a french horn;and sax/clarinet are the only option when it comes to dixieland bands i play with. Oboe I reserve for church pieces locally.
