Ahem, had to add on:
I've also found no problem in switching between, even during the same rehearsal. When I first learned the oboe and then had to switch back to clarinet for marching season, I got a bit confused in the fingerings, trying to apply the oboe fingerings to the clarinet. I do think it would help you to practice a bit of both each day, though.
The clarinet is a perfectly lovely instrument (mostly on the lowest register) but I agree that when I picked up the oboe, it was mine for life. I love to continue with both though, and I even use both to accompany for my church band. I have absolutely no trouble playing the first song on oboe and the next on clarinet.
I hope you can find the same ease, but just know that all people are different in their learning abilities, and even if you have trouble going back to oboe, you can get to your former glory with just a bit of focused oboe practice.
My advice? See if you like it, and see how well you can do with both. BTW: Where in God's green earth did you get a FREE clarinet???
