i play flute, clarinet, saxophone, and am starting on oboe (which is why i came to your board) and i can say that yes, to an extent, this does mess me up. on tuesdays, for example, i have jazz band from 3 - 5, for which i play saxophone. directly after i meet with an honor band for which i play clarinet. i almost always play the clarinet worse directly after playing saxophone or flute. im getting adjusted, and i think this is something that can be adjusted. for example, with the flute, the air is not under high pressure as in the clarinet or oboe, or else your tone will sound airy and all around horrible. its hard to readjust afterwards. also, the decision im being faced with, since i enjoy so many instruments (especially woodwinds, but also guitar and piano) is that it takes SO MUCH TIME that you have to be really determined if you ever want to be great at them all. i could probably be much better at clarinet if i stopped playing any other instrument, but id rather be really good at many instruments than phenomenal at one. im probably not going to make a living performing clarinet, but rather as a music therapist or a band director. this makes sense for me, so i guess you just have to figure out how you want to divide your time. well, enough babbling from me.
