i highly doubt any new instrument will cause too much damage...
its just a matter of maintenance and practice.
let me repeat that.
just maintain what you have and practice practice practice!
like someone mentioned, doubling in pit orchestras is the norm.
Im an oboe major, but i started on flute in 4th grade, added sax, then added clarinet and trumpet, eventually in 10th grade picked up the oboe, and senior year played horn, euphonium and trombone.
with time your muscles will learn and "click" in place once you get into the right mindset for an instrument. all the different instruments use different muscles.
doubling is a great asset to have.
my main focus now is oboe, sax a very close second. i play flute and clarinet quite often in jazz, pits, or other various things. the past two semesters ive even been stuck playing trumpet for the musical's pit because all the trumpets are brats and dont want to "waste" their time and my friend is the musical director. even though i was playing trumpet quite a bit, last semester was my best semester by far on oboe.
no matter what youre playing youre still growing musically.
doubling the right way wont do you any harm...
