Even one of the most renowned, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, looses its specific sound characteristics. That say some of the RCA musicians. New rules within the EU, combined with a system of anonymous test competitions behind a screen, makes that more and more candidate musicians from the own area of the orchestras loose out against foreign competitors. RCA director Jan Willem Loot sees a ‘crawling together to the same sound’ as a fact. If you choose the best candidate for a vacancy, you can no longer be dogmatic in your choosing. Foreigners prove frequently to be technically better. They look to win over the ‘Amsterdam’ playing styles that was frequently passed on from teacher to student. Especially woodwind players are worried. Bass clarinetist Geert van Keulen will soon retire as the last of what used to be the core of the Netherlands Wood Ensemble. ‘Never since the war was it as drastic as this’. More than two hundred candidates have been tested since the departure of clarinetist George Pieterson. Soon a new test play cycle will start, this time with more Asians and Americans. Hoboist Jan Kouwenhoven has, since the retirement of first hoboist Werner Herbers, a Russian next to him. ‘Ogrintchouk left all Netherlanders far behind him’.
