Perhaps Allan Vogel is a good example of the process you describe, having arrived at his playing style after tutelage from North American, German, and French mentors.

It is interesting (to me, anyway) to consider how all of our musical expectations and equipment have changed as our contact with various cultures has broadened. Not even a century ago, most musicians never heard anyone other than those in their own localities. Today, easier travel enables us to have touring orchestras and soloists, as well as access 24/7 to various sorts of electronic media. A certain homogenization of sound is almost a given, under these circumstances.

I also think your point is well-taken that what is happening worldwide is not a "tonal imperialism", if you will, but something like a "tonal melting-pot", to use two phrases that have cultural resonance for many Americans. I suspect that cultural change has always occured in that manner. It may be that it is happening more obviously, or more preciptiously, in our times than it did in the past. But I do believe the process is the way it has always been.
