Re: Has A Standard for Oboe Sound Become Universal?

Another way to describe tonal characteristics more "scientifically" is perhaps to talk in terms of "higher partials" and "lower partials" -- in place of "bright" and "dark". I've never measured it, nor would I have the faintest idea how to try, but it seems to me that what we sometimes call "bright" is a tone with more higher partials, and dark, the opposite, lower partials.

So, if we are today favoring a sound that emphasizes the "lower" component of the tone, why do you suppose that would be so? Does it have anything to do with amplification and recording of sounds -- e.g., the lower may sound better on a recording, or when amplified? Might it have something to do with modern concert halls?

Susan
