Re: Has A Standard for Oboe Sound Become Universal?

There was an extensive discussion about this phenomenon (or non-phenomenon) this last summer on this group. There's a lot of controversy about it. First of all, does the phenomenon really exist? Secondly, what causes it? One of the earlier explanations was that the wood became "fatigued" by the "high pressures" involved. (I think this is nonsense; the pressure drop is mostly across the reed and there's no way to sustain high pressures within the bore.) A more reasonable explanation is that the wood gradually deforms under the daily stress of wetting and drying. This may happen differently with different instruments. I was just talking with Peter Hurd about this the other day; he said that Laubin had measured bores of his instruments sent back for repair and not noticed any changes in bore dimensions over decades. Of course, Laubin oboes are known for their stability! Lorees, on the other hand, have a reputation for being of lighter (less wood, less dimensional stability?) and of "opening up" their sound with continued playing. Maybe after "opening up" they continue to warp into a bad situation.

Other minor changes in the instrument have also been cited as possible causes--lint in the key openings, etc. But these are easily fixable and shouldn't become a problem on a well-maintained instrument.

Still an Amateur, but not really middle-aged anymore
