Heinz Holliger is a prime example...yes, tone is subjective, but at least in the North American world it is largely agreed on that his tone really can sometimes peel the paint off walls. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but man can it sometimes get bright and edgy! But regardless what you think of his tone...what he does musically with his playing is something to behold, it is also widely accepted that he is a phenomenal musician.

Personally, I believe that the medium is part of the message...as Elaine Douvas said, you would never judge a singer without referring to the quality of her voice, and I believe that any instrument should be thought of in the same way. But if you don't feel that way, go and buy as many Holliger recordings as you can find! :)
