Re: Has A Standard for Oboe Sound Become Universal?

That might be one big thing that many has not considered.
Take the Concertgebouw for example. Their oboists has always maintained a rather light sound due to the unique accoustics of their concert hall. And i think 'light' and 'heavy' serves up as two very good words to describe tone. And some tones are just a bit more 'stuffed' than others. But then, my limited understanding of english vocabulary (not my 1st language), limits me from using english words to give an account of how one sounds like.

Tone like i always say is a very personal thing. Different personalities might provide the same ideas on one player's tone but we are here to discuss about this arent we? I guess tone is a part of 'audio' art where though can be scientifically analysed in some way can never be judged it's qualities and effects in culture and particularly music as a whole. I think the emphasis of different partials also affect projection, thus the different concepts of playing throughout the world.ohsuzan wrote:

It's definitely because of it's particular advantages in orchestral playing. But again, i wouldnt give that a definite yes because i still favour the European sound, and i wouldnt say that oboists in Europe cannot blend as well as players in America.

Why not hold a Oboe BBoard live forum somewhere in the future? Haha...
Bleak dream? I think listening to recordings together is a good way to resolve this. Plus the understanding of different styles through explanation of ideas by real professionals exercising what we always mention as different 'schools of playing'. Oboeblank, i could never really understand what bright and dark means...
