Re: Has A Standard for Oboe Sound Become Universal?

Hello Christopher, just for the records:
Jaap Stotijn was the principal oboïst of the Residentie Orkest, certainly not of the Concertgebouw Orkest. His son, Haakon Stotijn was from 1940 till 1964 solo-oboïst in the Concertgebouw Orkest.
I think the depersonalisation of the oboe- tone is a great loss. No other instrument, not considering the voice, has the possibility of creating a personal, ideal tone.
The Dutch oboe-school reeds were originally made of 0,8 mm gauge.
Overall length: 67mm or even less, width at the tip: 7,5 mm, length of the U scrape from the tip:25 mm average, three windings red copper wire (0.28mm) at 5 mm from the nylon winding.
The idea behind the thickness of the cane was the possibility to scrape deeper and reach softer wood and have better control over tonal quality.
I can go on for ages, but without a picture and sound, nobody will fully understand, I'm afraid.
Succes,
Marc.
