Nowadays, you can get digital calipers for a really affordable price.

All that matters is that the manufacturer ensure precision, which should be the case for most American, European and Japanese makers.
What I still don't get, jhoyla, is how you use that WHILE tying, especially if adusting the cane's position on the fly. The caliper's tail (I'm assuming you're using this part) would get in the way of the thread while winding....
