Hey Mary,
Dated or not, what you do is exactly what I do. This is what I call "eye-balling" to close the blades at the right place. I have experimented with putting the cane lower on the staple and got good reeds that way too.... I think I have to repeat the experiment to list observations.
The only difference is I don't use beeswax or glue. I suppose they can help with cotton or silk thread, but nylon slides and wraps well and the seal is produced by the cane pressure on itself.
What I like about the cane guide gadget or pre-binding is that it ensures no "slipping" (offset). To me, apart from rare exceptions, any sideways displacement of the blades leads to reeds that don't perform full dynamic range and tend to resist vibration. The brass cane guide just makes it a whole lot easier to do... not trying to sell Fabrice's gizmo, just saying my impressions. Pre-binding also works, but not as easily.
