Hey howard,
I hear you on that ultra-precision stuff. My only answer is that the instrument and the playing of it has incredibly changed over the past couple of hundred years.
In principle, I like to ask: "What did aulos players in ancien Greece do without all this mechanical stuff?" But the reality is that there are plenty of folk instruments in Europe and Asia that don't use these perfection gizmos but would also be unable to play alot of the classical stuff in the way we have come to expect it in the past dozen or so years. Believe me, what you young players are doing as a rule today was exceptional when I was a student .... and not just in Canada (which was providing most of the oboists at the World Youth Orchestra at the time).
The number of shapers now on the market is astounding! The availability of new things since the Internet became common place is also miles above to what I knew at the time. So this new gadget is really only a natural extension of a pre-binding technique that has existed for a very long time, but I did not know about it due to limitations in exposure.
I'm sure my wife will be happy to take the pictures! I'll probably post them next week.
