Robin, I'm to blame - I put you on to this!
The narrow brass profile seems much more elegant than the previous huge plastic contraption. And as you state it probably fits most shapes, since it is close to the top of the staple - nearly all shapes will have the same dimensions at this point.
Regarding drawing pencil lines etc. on the cane - I don't bother. I have a vernier caliper. I drop the stem down every staple I use, then lock it with the knurled clamp. That way I can move the folded cane higher or lower to make sure it seals, and still have an accurate way to gauge the end of the staple (using the jaws not the stem, easier to handle).
Regarding wrapping over the end of the staple - I completely agree that it is the number one sin in tying on, and will always result in a dead reed. Some people relax the tension for the top three wraps of thread, also, to keep the cane live.
I use Howard's overlap method, but I wrap my folded cane tightly with a few wraps of cling film with a tiny overlap, to ensure the lower blade is pushed tightly against the upper as I wrap the thread. You wouldn't know the overlap was there unless you used a magnifying glass.
On Linda Walsh's video she uses a small ring cut from a drinking straw to accomplish the same thing but I admit - the guide de roseau seems superior to all the other methods, from your pictures.
