Yeah, well in pre-binding you do have to actually look at your folded cane before wrapping it with thread .... otherwise, you're "solidifying" the state of offset you gave it!
Also, in all cases, the shape has to be correct and cleanly cut. That's my worry with Hortnagl machines and "straight" shapers: the symmetry required is the hardest one to ensure.
I'll make diagrams similar to those in the Jay Light book for next week's blog post. I'll also try to find some old reeds with various degree of offset to compare to the new reeds using pre-binding and the Cane Guide.... hopefully, my wife will be willing to take high definition pictures of the sides.
