Ah! One of the other ways that McCall differs from Sawicki (besides the drag-on-the-pad metric) is that McCall wants you to put the feeler gauge ALL THE WAY under the pad, while Sawicki (and I think just about all the others I have consulted) advise just putting it under the outer edge of the pad farthest away from the pivot.
I am not technically literate -- I'm at most a good monkey (as in, monkey see, monkey do). But I do like the way my oboe played after I did the McCall-guided adjustments. Enough so that I sent Covey A366 to him in Knoxville for its much, much needed cleaning and repair assessment.
