Author: Oboe Craig  Date:   2011-04-24 23:41 Hi Bobo, On your point about equal drag on oboe adjustments, when I took McFarland's adjustment class at a Mack Camp, he recommended a slightly lighter adjustment on the secondary (smaller) keys. He went on to say, he could not really explain why and sometimes got close to being able to explain it mechanically. That really got my attention and I put a lot of thought into it. Then one day, while working to replace my MG's brakes... bingo! Thinking of the brake pads as oboe pads, a larger pad would naturally create more drag than a smaller pad, provided more of one pad than the other was grabbing the paper. Then, I started doing drag tests using enough paper to cover the entire pad, and the smaller pad creating less drag became very meaningful and effective as I learned to do it. It may be the difference can be felt on a small sliver of paper, but I've developed a good feel for it doing this technique. I still use a small sliver going all around a pad (cork) to check for evenness of that single pad. And now, daily, as I stare down at the front hydraulic disk brakes on my mountain bike, I cannot help but think of oboe pad adjustments. -Craig (more obsessed with things oboe than ever...)
