Bobo,
McFarland taught the pinky touch on f res technique. And that the adjustment must be as minimal as possible.
It still kinda freaks me out how little drag on that key really works best. I cannot help thinking something further down will suffer.
But, I can put that aside and do it and it does work better.
And similarly, f#-g# across the bridge must be minimal and tested by playing low d or lower and lightly touching the LH g# key. We seek a minimal f# adjustment where no fuzziness enters with the tap on g# gives the best low range potential. Its very important. Gross test is just f# with g# tapped, and the subtle test playing low d and tapping g# is the real fine tuning test.
Over the years that has expanded to where I do drag tests, then back off the 2ndary keys until the fuzziness enters on the upper joint adjustments. Again the check is the fingered note and then some other note several pitches lower, listening carefully for the fuzz, or feeling the little extra resistance in the note. When its just a skosh too loose, a little extra finger pressure resolves it, then a little more screw adjustment and things get really nice.
So we are talking about playing tests, and the important thing here is repair guys who are not also players cannot do these. They can get close or lucky, but not really do the most precise adjustments for optimal results.
And the lesson in that is we oboe players need to learn this for ourselves.
(Sorry for the preachy tone in that...:)
