I'm a scientist too. What you've done is erected a straw man. What I said was, "It isn't worth debating whether blow-out occurs". You expanded that to include "how" it occurs and then put forth an analogy about the propagation of light to argue that it *is* worth debating "how" blow-out occurs. That's fine, but it's really a different question.

A more accurate analogy concerning "whether" blow-out occurs, IMO, is "Should we debate whether the light comes in the window when it's clear, based on tests by many observers with many windows, that the light does indeed come through the window?" There will always be the anecdotal oboist who played the same oboe throughout his career, but there are many more that move on to newer instruments as their old oboes get blown-out.

WRT the mechanism for blow-out, I'm interested in theories, but I'm even more interested in experimental data. I don't know whether there is enough experimental data to conclude that plastic instruments don't get blown-out. I have never played enough plastic, professional-quality oboes to have seen it myself. To test the theory about bore changes contributing to blow-out, I think you'd have to measure the bore of several new oboes and then measure them again after they are blown out to see if there is a difference. Having just bought an oboe, I'd be really interested in measuring its bore over time, but I don't have any gauges and for me, it's not worth the expense to buy them.
