My 20 year old Loree seems to play better as the years go by. The wood is fine but the plating is quite worn by me. Otherwise, I'd buy a new one. However, Mr. Laubin seemed to think that if the wood gets so that it dusts off rather than scrapes off when turned in a lathe, the wood could be too deteriorated by age and saliva.
I have a 1912 Buffet clarinet that sounds quite good, also. It has been played a lot, to 1951 by a Hollywood Bowl player, and to 1993 by me. The outer surface of the wood looks a little grainy but the inside is still polished. The mechanism is fine.
