Guy Chadash, who makes excellent clarinets and is a top repairman, says that blow-out definitely exists.
All wood, even grenadilla, swells when it gets wet. When wood is properly seasoned, by storage outdoors for many years, instrument bores return to reamer-size as the wood dries after playing.
Modern seasoning is done with heat and oil, and this wood is less stable. The bore becomes oversized with time, producing the problems wroand describes.
The solution: join Richard Woodhams and use a plastic upper joint.
