... this is a semantics thingy ... to my mind 'break' is a strong action verb, and since i do deliberately break my reeds when they're no good any more, the term 'blowing in' sounds OK to me, and this term does convey essentially the same principle as 'blowing in' a new wood oboe

a brand new reed right out of the box (or newly made) usually sounds a bit wild and is unpredictable, so 'blowing it in' for several minutes at a sitting over a few days tames and mellows it, and shapes the reed to suit your embouchure

squeezing a reed down (when it's too open) can't replace 'blowing in' a reed, squeezing down is a useful temporary fix to make the reed aperture narrow enough to produce a good tone right away, but that good tone will sound slightly different after being blown in a few days than it did on day one
