I too have found that a reed needs to be played on for a few days before I start tinkering with it, because sometimes it shapes up amazingly, and I don't need to fiddle with it after all. And I've had several reeds that I've "adjusted" before they were broken in, and then afterwards I really wished I hadn't done that, because with time it became obvious that they were fine all along, they just needing breaking in.
"Breaking in" a reed is pretty much the same process as breaking in a pair of leather shoes. It takes time for the fibers on both cane and leather to flex enough so that they--well, they "get broken in". It's not the same thing as "squeezing it down", any more than you can "break in" a new pair of leather shoes by squeezing them. It takes time, and use, and wearing, to break something in.
