I'm not a reedmaker, but the reeds I've bought from other people have one thing in common: I"ve learned that if the heart comprises a substantial "bump" or hill, that is, if there's a distinct "gouge" where well-defined windows stop at the heart (the shape of the heart in this case always reminds me of an earthworm's clitellum (warning: big picture of a worm, not for the squeamish ), then it will have a darker, more clarinet-like sound.
But if the heart is more blended into the windows, so it's a smoother gradation, and you really have to hold the reed up to the light so the windows are lit from the side or front before you can tell that they're there, then the sound will be brighter.
