Are you a bit older Bill? If you're younger i.e. University, I wouldn't worry too much about buying an English Horn yet. However, if you have the money, Howarth, Laubin, Marigaux, Rigoutat all make good instruments. I'm not sure if these are student or professional models, but do look at their websites to find out more. The thing with English Horns, however, is that not that many students/intermediates actually go out and buy the lower end english horns (as compared to the lower end oboes), so there is less of a demand to improve the quality. I would really suggest if you're going to go out and buy an English Horn, to buy a professional one. With oboes, the semi-pro models are alright, but with EH there are some really crappy ones out there. And Of course always play-test your instrument before you buy it!
