>>> My point is that really hot metal post expansion does affect moisture content in wood, this is very significant to wood fibres, and does contribute to cracking in wood, fine grained or otherwise <<<

Where's the evidence? Are there even anecdotal accounts of oboe posts being heated enough to dry the surrounding wood and cause a crack?

It seems you have a hypothesis. The next step is to see how it matches the evidence. If it doesn't, then the smart thing to do is to look for another hypothesis.

Here's some evidence contrary to your hypothesis:
Oboe manufacturers are very concerned about problems with cracking since crack repairs are costly. I've heard of bore liners, tone-hole liners but not once have I heard of liners for the posts.

I also know that new Laubin oboes have a very good reputation for avoiding cracks. Is it just a coincidence that the upper joints have a lined bore and lined tone-holes? Shouldn't there be some cracks do to post expansion?

Furthermore, the key posts exist on the lower joint, upper joint and bell. Why is it then that the preponderance of cracks occur on the upper joint? How does this square with your post-expansion hypothesis?
