vboboe, you wrote:

... so it seems to me circa 2 micrometers metal expansion would be quite significant to wood fibres; after all, it's the wood fibres which shrivel, split and separate, and when it becomes a huge Grand Canyon, big enough for human eyes to see it, oh no, my oboe's cracked!
... then there's the radiant heat distance from the fire to consider, the hotter the metal, the more comfortable wood would be * further away * but in fact is even closer than normal due to metal expansion in a limited space, so wood's toast <<<

I'll take this point by point. First, are you saying that a smaller distance between fibers correlates to an increased susceptibility to cracking? Or is it just the opposite. Or are you saying that somehow the expansion of the metal posts puts more stress on wood that is close grained. Where is your data for this? Or is this just a random musing.
Second, this is the first I've heard of anyone playing oboe close to an open flame. Best of luck with that.

My point in the original posting is that I think your warning about "the real problem is what happens when metal fittings heat up rapidly and expand inside their sockets in the wood" is not the real problem at all. The real problem is differences in moisture content across the wood. I think the fact that manufacturers try to reduce cracking by putting in bore liners supports this.
