I have a question: Have you ever had an oboe crack through a place where there was a post? I've had many cracked oboes and they've always cracked through a tone hole first -- never through a post. I'm just wondering where you got your information about the metal expanding causing cracks in oboes.

I have seen instruments crack around metal tenon sockets, but this was because the wood contracted (due to drying out), not because the metal expanded in the heat.

The coefficient of thermal expansion for nickel silver is on the order of
0.00002 mm/mm/degC which means that even over a 30 deg temperature range, it would only change 0.06%.
