I'm glad to see you write all that. I always either laugh my head off or sigh in exasperation when I hear instrument makers and instrumentallists make such a fuss about instruments for 440 or 442..... I suppose proportional stability can have a "preferred pitch".
I don't know about the low A save that it takes away the point of making oboes d'amore! I'm guessing - and this is really a guess - that apart from increasingly complexifying keywork, adding low notes is just plain hard on the harmonic system of the instrument.
The actual fundamental of the oboe is D because all fingers open is C# and the 1st real octave hike is the middle D. Other octave hikes are cheating and the lower notes are add-ons..... at least, that's as per the original design of the instrument. Over time, I'm sure makers have been tweeking the proportional placement of the tone holes with respect to the modern range of the instrument. This is probably why the bell is such a big deal with Lorées nowadays!
Look at a classical oboe side by side with a modern one: the distance between the reed tip and the left index hole looks different in pictures... I had not measured the difference back when I had access to period instruments.
