American, French, German, English or whatever, the reed is supposed to be set in motion by the air flow in order to get the physics of fluid dynamics and acoustics working in the instrument.
A preference for one type of crow versus another, in my opinion, should be the result of your body, its strengths and weaknesses. What has been very well discussed here by Craig and Howard is signs in the reed-only notes and air stream that predict how the instrument will behave.
Lighter crow, deeper crow, 2 or 3 octaves and so on is all a matter of how much endurance you have and how much a loud-mouth (air pressure and capacity) you are! In all cases, working the breathing and attacking techniques should improve the sound and the ease of production.
Otherwise, please don't choose a scraping style for sound quality, intonation or even the brand of instrument: all techniques MUST be able to provide for all the above and more.... otherwise, the technique is being poorly applied.
