I have to agree with Craig on that one, but at the same time, I tend to let myself prefer only the darkest, warmest colours.
Today is an exception, but recently, the darker reeds actually play better too. I finished an RDG -1 that sounds a little shrill and plays with perfect stability: this was how I sounded 15 years ago in Montréal.
I don't have time to make a whole lot of reeds and my practice time is very short. I want to focus on a limited range of repertoire, but I can't.... everything is so appealing from the baroque to the impressionist.
This being said, as long as a reed does not buzz or shrill, I'll be happy with it. It needs to be easy to play (because my endurance will remain low - just a natural consequence of being an amateur) and should not give me grief in tuning/stability.
Bright colors really are better for classical, impressionist and modern orchestral works and I prefer the darker ones for chamber works of all periods, especially the baroque.
