Early on, and even well into my stint playing in an army band I played with a lot of effort. Red-faced, huge abdominal pressure, lights getting dim... it was not the most healthy approach.
The sound was good, I got kudos, etc., but it was not until later I could play in a much more relaxed manner.
A little strength is good to have but as my last teacher proved to me, strenth is a substitute for proper relaxed playing.
It was a great lesson. Interestingly enough, good vibrato on oboe encourages the very desirable relaxtion I refer to.
Things come in cycles. Vibrato is another step into a good cycle.
Your husband is probably correct for now about your forcing things, but do not get discouraged... relaxation and beautiful vocal styles of vibrato are just days away...
Relax, enjoy, imagine the sound you want and let it happen...
Its Zen stuff in many ways, just imagine what you want and let it happen...
