Trying to play on a harder reed may not be the answer. It is possible to play on a harder reed and still sound bright. If you play on the sharp side of the pitch or bite you will always produce a "bright" sound. Bright vs. Dark, these of course are subjective terms and perhaps need to be reinterpreted. Maybe you don't mean bright but reedy or tippy, buzzy, grainy. Try to isolate what exatcly it is that you hear, and remember you are hearing what is being produced in your head, you do not hear the sound as other people in your band hear the sound. One thing you should do is record yourself and listen carefully to what you hear during the play-back, you may be surprised. Ask the people you sit beside to give you honest feedback of your sound, or if you feel you cannot trust them to be honest your band director may give you some honest feedback. If you are still not satisfied seek a teacher who can help you arrive at the desired tone you are searching for.
