First of all, if you are playing on storebought reeds, getting the sound you want is more than difficult.
In any case getting a harder reed is not the answer. You need a reed that allows you to blow properly, without fatigue, and without biting. All a harder reed will do is, well, make everything harder! (funny isn't it?!) If you find that the reed is collapsing on you when you try to blow more air through, then yes get a stronger reed, but not at the expense of the above three considerations.
The tone quality difference in between the three major types of scrapes (Eastern European short (germany), Western European short (france), and American long) is really not so different. And in all cases (although some may prefer one tone over the other) the sounds are inherently *good*. If you sound like a duck, no amount of reed-fiddling will solve your problem!
------>You have to learn how to breathe properly, and blow properly. You must remain as open in all areas of your body as you can be, and you must breathe very deeply. When you blow out, you must have enough control so that you can maintain that open position. There's no other way! You must make an "O" shape with your mouth to resonate, and this will eliminate any biting, and thus duck sounds. Worry more about your breathing than your reeds. After all, how much can you control a reed? not much! How much can you control your own body? A lot!
