I'd have to say that the words "dark" and "bright" are really ambiguous terms...because it leads one to believe that if your tone is not "american" (i.e. dark) then it is not good.
I won't lie I *prefer* a very deep rich sound from the oboe; a very focused sound with a lot of low partials.
Having said that perhaps the term "balance of overtones" would be a better word to describe the different reeds.
-American reeds get a lot of their lower partials by scraping the back down. -German type reeds scrape from halfway on the reed and remove considerably more from the heart area (they don't have three distinct portions, but rather it is just a continuous slope) than a long scrape reed.
-French reeds are similar, except the tip is longer and proportions of the heart are different as well.
The tone comes from the oboe player and not the reed. Certain reeds, however, are set up to be played in a certain way, and work best when played that way.
Any one of you could take a reed from anywhere and play it, and you would still generally sound how you generally sound. Obviously response and control of tone will be different, but the sound really doesn't change.
