... if the reed is new and doesn't work for me, i try to fix it, successes get played, failures get tossed right away and tubes are recycled
... several so-so new reeds are waiting to be fixed when i need one
... if the reed is middle-aged, played well so far and still has some life in it, i send it on vacation for about 3 months and then see what it's like
my embouchure's changed a bit more by then, so it's easier to tell if it's worth keeping any longer or not, some can be fixed a bit to renovate them
... when any reed doesn't work for me any more, and it's been played awhile, it's usually toast, then i recycle the tubes
On the other hand
... a middle-aged reed that played very well last week at normal room temperature surprisingly balked on me in band practice last night -- but, the band-room was very hot yesterday, my mouth was getting dry, and although the reed itself seemed moist enough, it didn't play well -- i really wanted to break it, but ... i didn't
... good thing, because today, it's quite happy again at cooler home temperature
