I actually do keep my old reeds for a long period of time for precisely the reason that your clarinet friend does. I find that often, if I think I have 'worn a reed out' and then leave it for a few weeks, I come back to it and it feels a lot better (and not just for 15 minutes, but for at least a few days). It does suck because you have to invest a fair bit in staples, but I think it's worth it. I play most of my reeds for a few months this way.

I think part of the secret to getting reeds to last a really long time is to make them over a long period of time in many sittings, and obviously just using hard cane and not pressing. If you do that, they should last much longer!
