 Throwing away old reeds

Hey everyone,

I'm a clarinetist, so I don't know about this as far as double reeds go:

Do you keep all/some of your old reeds, in the event that perhaps with time you may find some revitalized reeds among them?

I ask this because most of us single-reedists (most everyone I know, anyway) keep all of our "dead" reeds, because in a few months/years/etc some of them may become real jewels again. And when I mean dead, I mean that the reed still looks decent, but doesn't feel right anymore - there's no point in keeping a reed that is slightly chipped, or completely tonally off the chart, etc. There are reeds (many, I should say) that you just KNOW are hopeless.

My friend, an oboist, always completely destroys her reeds when they give out. It's entertaining and not a huge deal, but it still made me think about why she would (especially since they seem so much more expensive!) and so I asked her one day and she said that it is because double reeds do not at all have a chance of getting better over time again.

Now it's not because I don't truly believe her, nor is it that I want to go back to her and prove her wrong. This is for my own curiosity and information.

What do you people do?

Chris Arcand
