When the reed is dead, it's dead... If you make your own reeds and one is exemplary, you might keep it around to use it as a scraping reference later on in the future. Meanwhile, if you don't, you might as well recycle the staple (brass/cork thingy).

Now, if it doesn't work due to weather conditions, then maybe you might keep it around in hopes that the weather will change back, but I find that if the weather has changed for a long period of time, my reed usually doesn't work again when the weather finally does change back.
