I did find most of the advanced beginner (start playing oboe as 2nd instrument but then change to 1st like myself) concern about intonation problem very much, it might be because oboe is not like other wind instrument, the intonation is so harsh on it ! ( at least for me, never really bothered about the intonation on clarinet )
And I guess reeds do affect intonation a lot. I have two old reeds from my teacher which play really wonderfully. However, throu practice and rehearsals for a month, they went uncontrollably sharper and the tone colour became very dull, losing the charactoristic of oboe sound. ( They are more or less sounding like the crap La Voz reeds now)
My teacher then gave me another reed, which is a lot harder to my feeling. Also it has strong breathy tone and the reed is not as sensitive as ones b4. I found it extremely hard to hold the tone in tune (I have to blow with very fast air all the time, otherwise it just stops sounding anyth), and it is very air-consuming. (I dont know if it's my problem either?)
I know oboe students got to learn the ability to get used to all kind of reeds, and embouchure be adjustable to them. But at the beginning stage, just keep bothering your teacher to make you the most suitable reed is a better solution, IMO.
