Thanks for the replies so far!

I want to rephrase part of my question because I don't think I was clear.

I guess what I wanted was to gauge my progress. Should I expect, at 4 months of playing, to be in close to perfect tuning at home? As I mentioned in my original post I currently have one reed where this is in fact the case, but that reed is dying. It's on my new reed that I experience the problem with the sharpness. This led me to believe that reeds are part of the intonation equation (along with embouchure and air pressure). As someone very new to reed adjustment and making, I am not always able to fix them without ruining them. In the case of this new reed I know that it's playing sharp but it responds easily. So I've kind of postponed trying to fix the pitch problem. Is it ok for me to use that reed at home to practice scales or should I stop playing it until it gets adjusted? Since in real performance situations you are not always in perfect tuning, how far from dead center can I sway during my practicing?

My teacher has been telling me that for a beginner I am actually worrying too much about intonation. He says most people don't focus on it until after their embouchure is more set. My tuning has been quite good during my recent lessons.

What I want to know is what to focus on right now. There are so many things and my type-A personality wants to do everything right: fingering, breathing, reading, tone, intonation, articulation, expression, dynamics, etc.

I want to make sure I am doing whatever will help me progress the quickest but at the same time I don't want to get overwhelmed and discouraged.

Thanks again!
