It's sad to hear that the reed problems you're having are leading you in the direction of giving up the oboe. DON'T GIVE UP!
I have bad reed days, too, but what helps me is having *many* reeds on hand. As long as you have a nice supply of reeds, you should find more consistency. Also, see if you can learn to play on a not so perfect reed. It's a matter of conditioning and it can be done. The window of opportunity is better when you can play on reeds with minor issues because these "minor issues" are always going to be there. I'm at the point where if all else fails, I can play on an old blown out reed, squeeze it open with a good hot 2-minute soaking, and play it some more! It's not so bad, don't quit EBH!
