Re: So, is oboe really difficult?

As a horn player....yes it was difficult to learn; transposing is no big deal for the person whose brain is working correctly, but it is more of a challenge for the adult learner.

I took up oboe a year ago and found two things: one, the instrument itself is not all that bad, that is, I have been able to get more music out of it at an earlier stage than I did horn. Horn took a LONG time to get a good tone.

However, I've pretty much given up on oboe because of the reed problem. I did not realize that the inconsistency of reeds was going to be the nuisance that it is; doesn't matter if I'm attempting to make them myself or buying them, they are inconsistent. With my horn, if it fails to perform, it is my fault in technique and all I have to do is fix it with practice. With reeds, the performance is out of my control and at my age I guess I've found out that I don't want that much hassle any more.

As to why a lot of people seem to take up both horn and oboe, I think it's a personality that likes challenge.

For the person who never could get a decent sound out of the violin: I was professional for many years, and if you lived locally I could teach you to get a good sound in about five minutes. It is not complex but for some reason it is not taught. Also, with violin, the instrument itself is the main factor in your tone, once you know how to get tone. You can't get a Strad sound out of a plywood box, no matter how good your technique.
