The Oboe BBoard

Sorry for the serial posts, but there's something else I meant to add on the general topic. The "summer wind ensemble" I'm currently participating in has two oboes and two-and-a-half clarinets. The local pool of talent listed in the Amateur Chamber Music Players directory has several oboists, but no clarinetists. This in spite of the fact that, in your typical high school band, clarinetists outnumber oboists 10:1 or so. To me this suggests that oboists, having invested more in learning to play their instrument, (and more money in buying the instruments, too!) are more likely to continue playing into their adulthood.
I'd be interested in whether this is a general or simply local phenomenon--this corner of Southern California is pretty anomalous, culturally speaking, so I may be looking at skewed data.

Still an Amateur, but not really middle-aged anymore
