We sight-read through a concert band arrangement of 'Forza del Destino' last night, and the flute/oboe/clarinet unison tune was in concert Gb with a few Fbs thrown in there for good measure too. Great.
And immediately after that, a concert band arrangement of Shostakovich's 'Festive Overture' in concert Ab (though I'm not sure what the original is in). Nice one.
Why do military/concert band arrangers make things easy for the also saxes (and COUGHtenor hornsCOUGH) but put us concert pitch players in an awkward situation (and I'll add 'Orpheus in the Underworld' to the list)? Saxes can get around remote keys far easier than us oboes. We have enough grief already, but playing fast runs in keys of more than four flats is just adding to it.
